Journalist and Expert on the Greater Caribbean

My name is Mylène Colmar. I have been a journalist since 2008, and I live in Guadeloupe, at the heart of the Greater Caribbean.

Through this blog, I analyse the issues, the actors, and the transformations of this complex region — one too often reduced to clichés. My goal is straightforward: to offer a sharper, fairer, and better-documented perspective on the Caribbean. You won’t find a postcard here. You’ll find the keys to understanding.

Why This Blog

The Greater Caribbean is a strategic space, shaped by powerful economic, political, cultural, and social dynamics. And yet it remains poorly understood in its full complexity. This blog was born from that observation. It offers:

  • current affairs analysis
  • breakdowns of regional issues
  • profiles of key actors
  • cultural and heritage content

The idea is to go beyond the surface — to bring meaning, context, and depth.

If you are interested in the Caribbean on its own terms, if you want to understand rather than skim, you are in the right place. Browse the articles, share the content, or subscribe to follow future publications.

My Background

I hold a Certificate in Journalism (print and web) from the Université de Montréal. I also have an academic background in literature and French civilisation, with a DEA (Master’s degree) and a Maîtrise in Modern Literature from the Université Paris IV Sorbonne.

Since 2008, I have worked as a journalist, primarily for online and print media. In 2012, I founded Plume Caraïbe, a writing and editorial consulting agency.

My work extends well beyond writing and editorial advice.

Together with Jessica Brudey, I co-founded The Flamboyant Agency, a publishing house dedicated to culinary books. We also created Foodîles Agency, a structure that develops projects around gastronomy, events, and the promotion of local expertise. In 2023, we launched Foodîles le lab’ — Guadeloupe’s first food-focused third place.

These experiences directly feed my journalistic perspective, keeping me in close contact with the economic, cultural, and entrepreneurial realities of the territory.

A Voice Rooted in the Caribbean

I have been blogging since 2007. Over the years, I have built an editorial approach centred on understanding Caribbean territories in all their diversity.

The Caribbean is not a backdrop. It is a living space, shaped by tensions, innovations, histories, and multiple identities. That is what I document here.
