The Leaders of the Greater Caribbean
Not all of them hold the same level of authority. Some lead states, others governments, and others major territorial collectivities.
Anguilla: A British Overseas Territory, Anguilla’s head of state is King Charles III. The head of government is Cora Richardson-Hodge.
Antigua and Barbuda: A Commonwealth realm, Antigua and Barbuda also has King Charles III as head of state. Gaston Browne is the current Prime Minister.
Aruba: An autonomous territory within the Kingdom of the Netherlands since 1986, the island is led by a Prime Minister. The current holder of that office is Evelyn Wever-Croes.
Bahamas: The Bahamas shares the same status as Antigua and Barbuda. The archipelago is governed by a cabinet led by Prime Minister Philip Davis.
Barbados: Barbados is also a Commonwealth member. However, it became a republic on 29 November 2021 at midnight. The President is Jeffrey Bostic. Mia Mottley (pictured on the cover) is Prime Minister.
Belize: Formerly known as British Honduras, Belize is also a Commonwealth member. The country is governed by a cabinet led by Prime Minister Johnny Briceño.
Bermuda: A British territory, Bermuda’s Prime Minister is David Burt.
Bonaire: The representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is Jan Helmond.
British Virgin Islands: The Premier is Natalio Wheatley.
Cayman Islands: A British territory, the Cayman Islands’ head of government is André Ebanks.
Colombia: The Republic of Colombia has been led by President Gustavo Petro since August 2022.
Costa Rica: Costa Rica is led by President Rodrigo Chaves Robles.
Cuba: The President of Cuba is Miguel Díaz-Canel.
Curaçao: Curaçao is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Governor is Lucille George-Wout. The current Prime Minister is Gilmar Pisas.
Dominica: Dominica’s President is Sylvanie Burton. The current Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has held the position since 2004.
Dominican Republic: The President of the Dominican Republic is Luis Abinader.
El Salvador: The republic is led by President Nayib Bukele.
Grenada: A Commonwealth state, Grenada’s Prime Minister is Dickon Mitchell.
Guadeloupe: Guadeloupe is a French overseas department, represented in the archipelago by a prefect. The current prefect is Thierry Devimeux. Guadeloupe also has a Regional Council, chaired by Ary Chalus, and a Departmental Council, chaired by Guy Losbar.
Guatemala: Guatemala is a republic led by President Bernardo Arévalo.
Guyana: Formerly a British territory, the Republic of Guyana is led by President Irfaan Ali.
Guyane : Like Guadeloupe and Martinique, French Guiana is a French overseas department represented by a prefect, currently Antoine Poussier. It is also a territorial collectivity led by Gabriel Serville.
Haiti: Haiti has had no president since the assassination of Jovenel Moïse on 7 July 2021. Alix Didier Fils-Aimé serves as Prime Minister.
Honduras: Honduras is led by Nasry Asfura, who serves as both head of state and head of government.
Jamaica: Also a Commonwealth member, Jamaica’s Prime Minister is Andrew Holness.
Martinique: Martinique is a French overseas department, represented in the archipelago by a prefect. The current prefect is Etienne Desplanques. The territorial collectivity is administered by an executive council chaired by Serge Letchimy.
Mexico: Claudia Sheinbaum is the President of Mexico.
Montserrat: A British territory, Montserrat’s Prime Minister is Easton Taylor-Farrell.
Nicaragua: The Republic of Nicaragua is led by President Daniel Ortega.
Panama: The head of state is José Raúl Mulino.
Puerto Rico: A US Commonwealth territory, Puerto Rico’s head of state is Donald Trump, represented in the territory by Jenniffer González Colón.
Saba: The representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is Jan Helmond.
Saint-Barthélemy: Saint-Barthélemy is a French overseas collectivity. Cyrille Le Vély is the delegated prefect. The other major authority is Xavier Lédée, President of the Territorial Council.
Saint Kitts and Nevis: The Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis is Terrance Drew.
Saint Lucia: In keeping with its Commonwealth status, Saint Lucia has a Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre.
Saint-Martin: Saint-Martin is a French overseas collectivity. Cyrille Le Vély is the delegated prefect. The other major authority is Louis Mussington, President of the Territorial Council.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: For Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a British-linked territory, the situation remains the same. The Prime Minister is Godwin Friday.
Sint Eustatius: The representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is Jan Helmond.
Sint Maarten: Part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Sint Maarten has been an autonomous constituent country since 2010. As such, it has a government led by Prime Minister Luc Mercelina.
Suriname: Jennifer Geerlings-Simons is the current President of this republic.
Trinidad and Tobago: This republic is led by President Christine Kangaloo. Kamla Persad-Bissessar is Prime Minister.
Turks and Caicos Islands: Like the Cayman Islands, these islands are British. The Prime Minister is Charles Washington Misick.
United States Virgin Islands: The head of state of the US Virgin Islands is Donald Trump. His representative in the archipelago and head of government is Albert Bryan Jr.
Venezuela: In the night of 2 to 3 January 2026, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was abducted and exfiltrated by the United States. Vice-President Delcy Rodríguez is serving as acting head of state.
